I visited Haji Noora yesterday with my family. I have never tasted anything as good as his nihari. The rotis are outstanding and the flavor of the nihari is impeccable. Certainly, one of the best meals consumed by me in Delhi!!! Thanks Himanshu/EOID for introducing the joint. Kallu Nihari next.

@long stem red,red rose: India is a diverse country. Some think the cow is sacred, and others think beef is divine :)

That said, most beef served in Delhi is actually buffalo meat, due to a ban on cow slaughter enacted by a previous Hindu nationalist government.

I thought cow was a sacred animal in India...

Further to my comments, if any of Nahari lovers wishes to contact me about dishes from Delhi, not at all, I would be delighted to explain. I am hoping to be there by the middle or end of October.

For Nahari lovers:
The word Nahari comes from an-Nahaar, meaning morning. I am from Darya Ganj. My family has been in Delhi/Faridabad for generations. Nahari is a winter morning dish for breakfast. It is supposed to be eaten with SheerMaal, round bread made of Maeda, the white flour, soaked in Milk, salt, a little sugar and Zaafraan, (saffron), laid layer upon layers, 'purtau' and traditionally roasted in the oven pit, tandoor. We never ate Nahari, except for breakfast and only during winter months. The meat, traditionally, should be of cow leg with the bone and slow cooked overnight in a heavy pot dug into the ground. I hope to visit my birth place. I also hope to visit the Nahari place.

@Hemanshu
I doubt that any restaurants are serving beef nihari -- bade ki nihari is made with buffalo, not beef. I believe it's illegal to sell or serve beef. I am sure there are some places that do so on the sly, probably to longtime customers.

Jude: Most places in old Delhi and elsewhere serve beef nihari, which I rate much better than mutton nihari. Nonetheless if your friend wants the latter, you can always send him to Karim's.

And I think you can take the crowd in your step. It's the places which don't get crowds of customers that you should stay away from :)
